Mariners wishing to gain the harbour safely after nightfall at Barfleur have to align these lights to ensure a safe passage through the harbour entrance. These feux occult in concert. There are quite a lot of antérieurs and postérieurs around the coast of France. Some of these feux are definitely not lighthouses but beacons. These two here have definite optics so they get my vote as lighthouses, just. And they look good.
The light on the end of the harbour wall gets honourable mention in the LHD but for all that, is not a lighthouse. See below.
There is no doubt about the lighthouse one can see a mile or two north from Barfleur, no doubt at all… now that is a lighthouse! Hurrah, we've got to Barfleur proper!
